Sharon Stevens, Occupational Therapy Assistant
I joined NRS Healthcare as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in 2014, with very little experience. I have since learnt so much through my job role, with support from my supervising OT, and through the high level of training that I have received.

Occupational Therapist frequently asked questions

As described by Wikipedia, Occupational therapy is a branch of healthcare that involves the use of assessment and intervention to develop, recover, or maintain the meaningful activities, or occupations, of individuals. Watch these short videos by our occupational therapists to learn more.

In the words of the Royal College of Occupational Therapy, an occupational therapist “helps people of all ages overcome challenges completing everyday tasks or activities … Occupational therapists see beyond diagnoses and limitations focusing on hopes and aspirations.” During an assessment, “they look at relationships between the activities you do every day – your occupations – alongside the challenges you face and your environment.”

An Occupational Therapist will help identify the challenges you are experiencing with your condition(s), whether long or short term. They’ll ask you questions and observe how you would complete everyday activities, and work with you to set some achievable goals. They can suggest tips and tricks to help, and will recommend the most suitable equipment to help you achieve your goals and live your best life.

Our Occupational Therapists are very familiar with the vast range of daily living aids we stock on the Complete Care Shop website and so are ideally placed to recommend the most suitable equipment or gadget to help you. Of course, they’ll also recommend something from another company if they believe that is the best for you, or even refer you to a doctor or another healthcare specialist if appropriate. Although employed, trained and insured by us, they act impartially and will never sell you anything you don’t need or that is not suitable for your needs. In addition, our Occupational Therapists are not restricted by any NHS or Local Authority policies, and so may be able to suggest more flexible solutions to overcome a difficulty you’re experiencing.

Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) work very closely together. The OTAs support the OTs: they carry out assessments for more general needs and are able to advise on equipment, always supported by the OTs. Our OTAs will only suggest something they are sure about and comfortable recommending; otherwise, they will seek the advice of, or refer on to, an OT.

Our Occupational Therapists can provide impartial advice and assistance to anyone aged 18 or over. We also offer advice on paediatric equipment to parents and carers.
